What Files Are Not Synced By AeroFS?

There are certain files that AeroFS will not sync due to cross-platform incompatibilities between Operating Systems (i.e. Windows, Mac, Linux). The following is a list of file types and file names that are not supported by AeroFS.

Small system files:

  • thumbs.db
  • icon\r
  • .ds_store
  • desktop.ini
  • ~*.tmp
  • *.attr
  • Extended file attributes

Temporary files:

  • starts with a tilde and dollar sign (~$)
  • starts with a period and a tilde (.~)
  • starts with a tilde and ends with .tmp (~*.tmp)
  • starts with a period and ends with .kate-swp (.*.kate-swp)
  • starts with .goutputstream-
  • starts with .aerofs

Filenames containing Windows reserved characters:

  • forward slash (/)
  • backslash (\)
  • vertical bar or pipe (|)
  • question mark (?)
  • asterisk (*)
  • less than (<)
  • greater than (>)
  • colon (:)
  • double quote (")

OS-specific files:

  • Files such as Windows symlinks or Mac aliases are not supported
  • Mac Finder tags

Files that can be synced but with limitations:

  • Files/folders that begin with a period (i.e. ".share.doc" or "..sharedfolder") can be successfully synced, however on Mac and Linux these files/folders will be interpreted as system files, so the files will appear as hidden files. The best way to avoid this is by getting rid of the period(s) at the beginning of the file or folder name.
